"Just do the right thing"
The other day some very dear friends came to spend the weekend with us here at the ranch. It was so nice to get to spend time with old friends. We went to a large outdoors store and something happened that got me thinking. It happened a few days ago and it still resonates so strongly in my heart. The more I thought about it the last few days, I realized I just had to share it. So despite the fact I have not blogged in a long time, I had to take a moment to share.
The scenario ::
They have a little girl that is about 4 years old and a little boy that is about 6. We were going to go upstairs and the kids requested we take the elevator. We made our way to the elevator door and were standing there waiting. The little boy said, "I'm going to press the button." The little girl got excited and started say, "I'm gonna push the button." The longer we waited for the elevator, the more excited they got. Within a minute, the kids were trying to get to the corner where the elevator opens and they started pushing eachother to make sure they were in the prime spot to get in first to get to the button first. Their mom noticed the excitement and asked the kids what was going on. The two kids quickly went right up to their mom and started pleading their case. Their mom stops them and asks the little girl, "Did he ask to push the button first?" The little girl took a moment before she answer the question and her thoughts were broken by her mom's voice, "Well? Did he?" The little girl quietly says, "yes". Her mom looks at her and says five little words that have stuck in my head. "Just do the right thing." The little girl surrendered, we waited for the elevator and as we went in, the little girl stood back and did the right thing.
My thoughts ::
Number one, I am SO proud to call this family my friends. Watching them raise these kids is truly an honor. Spending the weekend with them showed me how getting back to the basics is very much possible! We get to have many kids and families at our home and as we watch kids running the show with parents throwing their arms up in the air in surrender saying, "that's kids for you" has left us wondering many times if parenting actually still happens. It takes more time and often times, is a lot more work, but watching them shows that the work is worth it!
Second, what a concept!!! "Just do the right thing"! We seem to live in a society that at its very core is moving closer and closer to an entitled life. We see more and more, people getting away from responsability trying to take the easy way out.
It is hard to understand why doing the right thing is so diffucult in this world today.
What if we all chose to live a life where we just do the right thing? What if when situations come about that test our character or ask us to help others, we just did the right thing?
What a thought! I hope that my few scribed words would encourage us. I hope that it would resonate with you as it has me and when oppurtunities present themselves, that we would all just do the right thing!!
